About the Event

Shady Rest Golf and Country Club in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, is a historic landmark—established in 1921 as the first African American-owned and operated country club in the United States. Once home to golf pioneer John Shippen and a vibrant hub for Black excellence in sports, music, and culture, it now stands as a public course and living tribute to a rich legacy.

Celebrate the legacy of Shady Rest Golf and Country Club—the first African American-owned country club in the U.S.—with a day of history, culture, and community, and *be sure to join Grandma Emma’s table for an irresistible assortment of homemade desserts that honor the sweet traditions of the past*.
